After years on set, it became obvious to me that there were just as many focus pullers who didn’t use the traditional rubber handle as those that did. So, I started to whittle some solutions out of discarded soft wood. The early handles were rudimentary but the feedback was good and I started receiving requests. It wasn’t realistic for me to make bespoke handles for everyone so instead I took what I had learned and created two handles that combined the two main principles that were requested most; comfort and grip without adding size: 

SLIM

Designed to fit tightly against the handset, the smooth contours of the SLIM will fit in your palm from multiple angles whilst adding almost no additional size or weight. Carved out of highly dense and durable Rosewood.

CUSTOM

The Custom features contoured finger grooves for additional comfort and grip. A carved ‘lip’ above the index finger helps to support the weight of the handset more centrally avoiding strain in the forearm and elbow over long periods of holding.

One of the requests that I received was for a Traditional HU3 Handle but made out of wood.

I increased the size of the thumb groove and made the handle slightly deeper but the design stays true to the original handle so everyone who uses it will recognise the familiar feel. This hardwood version of the original handle is also available on this website.

USING WOOD

Wood is sustainable, natural, lightweight and strong. It’s versatility makes it perfectly suited to ergonomics and it won’t contribute to our carbon footprint.

Wood is alive and it breathes, which gives it natural grip and a pleasant feel. It won’t become sticky in hot weather and when the temperature drops, it won’t feel cold, clammy or damp. Treated properly, wood is waterproof and if looked after will last a lifetime.

Every handle is finished by hand and will have its own unique grain patterns. Over time, scratches and markings will contribute to each handle’s unique story.
